About United States Coast Guard Academy

The United States Coast Guard Academy is the smallest of America's five federal service academies, with a total enrollment of about 1000 cadets.  The Coast Guard Academy develops leaders of character for our nation.  The campus is situated on 100 acres of rolling hills on the west bank of the Thames River in historic New London, Connecticut. The Academy is the resident campus for the Corps of Cadets. It is also home to the Coast Guard Leadership Development Center, Coast Guard Museum, Coast Guard Band, and home port for the Barque Eagle, the only tall ship in America's active military service. There are eight Majors leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with five in Engineering, and the remaining three offered in Government, Humanities, and Management.

Description Our Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) is a one-week summer program that gives you the chance to see if the Academy is right for you, and if you have what it takes to succeed. If you are selected, you will experience the rigor, discipline, and rewards of the Coast Guard Academy personally, just like a cadet, for one week in July following your junior year in high school. There are 3 sessions available throughout July.

If yes, what is the procedure to obtain a scholarship/stipend? Need-based scholarships are available to cover either tuition or travel expenses. Scholarship application forms are available as part of the AIM application supplemental forms.
Are there any prerequisites? Yes
If yes, what are they? To apply, you must be a U.S. citizen and a junior in high school.  You must be in good health and physical condition, able to run, do push-ups and sit-ups, and handle the heat and humidity of a Connecticut summer!  Your weight must be proportional to your height.  Common medical disqualifiers include color-blindness, asthma and vision not correctable to 20/20.

Event Name Eclipse Diversity Weekend

Description High school sophomores & juniors, as well as seniors with appointment offers-- join Academy graduates and cadets for this annual celebration of diversity! This two-day event brings African-American and other minority alumni home to renew friendships and professional ties, and to mentor current and future cadets. Eclipse kicks off Friday afternoon with a cadet parade and ends Saturday afternoon with a talent show. Guests are paired with cadet escorts and stay overnight in the cadet barracks (dorms). Parents are welcome to attend but should plan to lodge off campus. Appointees attending Eclipse may combine their Spring Cadet-for-a-Day visit for an extended stay. Come to Eclipse and see why many graduates say it made the difference in their decision to attend the Academy!

Description Students of All Races Diversity Program  Good day,

I would like to invite you to an excellent opportunity to visit the Coast Guard Academy. We have a program called Students Of All Races (S.O.A.R.) Diversity Program which will take place on November 30th. S.O.A.R.  Diversity Program formerly known as Super Saturday is designed to expose a diverse population of students and their families to the Academy. This program is offered on Fridays three times a year (twice in the fall and once in the spring) and is limited in size to allow greater personal contact with cadets, Admissions staff, faculty members and graduates. Guests attend a slide show and Q&A session, observe a class, receive a tour of campus, participate in two dynamic panels meeting officers and current cadets and enjoy lunch in the Cadet Wardroom. Decide if a Coast Guard Academy education is right for you, and depart understanding "the Coast Guard family". This program is free to attend. You must register for this program using your Academy Profile on our website.

If the cost to come and visit is a factor, we will offer a limited number of need-based scholarships to cover the expenses associated with the trip. Once you register, you will receive additional information on how to apply for one of these scholarships.  This program is a great way to see the Academy and speak with the current cadets.

Description Are you a girl in your junior or senior year of HS who is thinking about an engineering, science, math or technology degree and want to learn more about exciting ways you can make a difference in our world? Offered twice a year-- Science, Technology, and Engineering Program-- or “STEP” for Women is a unique six-hour Saturday program that combines real-world academics with an Academy orientation. Guests will enjoy access to cadets, faculty members, Admissions staff, and meet like-minded young women. The day will consist of hands-on workshops, a campus tour, lunch, and Q&A session. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate. Participants depart better prepared to choose a college major, with insight about the unique opportunities available to Academy graduates.

Description Cost
Tuition, room, and board are paid for by the government. All candidates who accept an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy must submit $3,000 to purchase uniforms, a notebook computer, school supplies, and other necessary items. OTHER THAN THIS INITIAL COST, THERE ARE NO ADDITIONAL FEES FOR ACADEMY CADETS.

Pay
All cadets receive pay totaling $8,760 per year.  Cadets' pay is furnished by the government for uniforms, equipment, textbooks, and other expenses incidental to training. These funds cover all the cadets' expenses and are used only as directed by the Superintendent. Each cadet receives a portion of his or her monthly pay for personal expenses. Any funds remaining in cadets' accounts are given to them upon graduation.

Obligation
Upon graduation from the Coast Guard Academy, there is a five-year commitment to serve as a commissioned Coast Guard officer. Most cadets go to sea after graduation, although some go to Marine Safety Offices, Group Operations, or Flight School.

Description The US Coast Guard Academy, as a federal service academy, is federally funded and holds a very competitive admissions process for the estimated $300k education. For students with great potential, but who did not have sufficient academic preparation throughout high school, we offer the CGA Scholars Program. This program sends qualified students to an extra year of college prep under a full scholarship and a stipend in order for them to attend the US Coast Guard Academy the following year, ready to succeed.
