About Brown University

Brown University is a leading Ivy League institution with a distinctive undergraduate academic program, a world-class faculty, outstanding graduate and medical students, and a tradition of innovative and rigorous multidisciplinary study.   Brown’s climate of openness and cooperation can be traced back to its founding in 1764 as an institution welcoming to students of all religious persuasions; its commitment to diversity and intellectual freedom remains a hallmark of the University.   The Brown curriculum, adopted in 1969, stems from that commitment, allowing students to assume responsibility for the direction of their education, develop their inherent strengths, and discover new interests and passions.    A Brown education offers students the breadth and depth of a major research University’s resources and the intimate experience of an undergraduate liberal arts and sciences College.

Scholarships
Scholarship Name Sidney E. Frank Endowed Scholarship Fund
Web Site http://financialaid.brown.edu/Cmx_Content.aspx?cpId=19
Application Deadline Friday February 1, 2008
Description

Financial aid at Brown is a partnership that draws on the combined resources of the student, his or her family, federal and state governments, and the University itself. Eligibility for aid from the University, therefore, is based on financial need. Brown, as a member of the Ivy League, does not offer aid based on academic achievement, athletic ability, or any other form of merit aid but guarantees to meet 100% of demonstrated need for freshman applicants throughout their entire undergraduate career at Brown.

In September 2004, Sidney E. Frank, a member of the class of 1942, made a gift of $100 million to Brown University—the largest gift in the University’s history—to establish an endowed scholarship fund that will provide financial assistance for the neediest undergraduate students at Brown University who could not otherwise afford the full cost of tuition and other costs of receiving an education at Brown. Recipients of the scholarships from this fund will be known as “Sidney E. Frank Scholars,” and they will receive financial assistance that will replace standard first-year work expectations with additional scholarship. Once fully implemented it is anticipated that there will be approximately 128 Frank Scholars on campus in any given year.

Those eligible students admitted with the greatest financial need will be designated Sidney E. Frank Scholars; there is no separate application. Frank Scholars will not have work-study as part of their standard first-year financial aid package. Additional scholarship funds will replace any work-study expectation that would normally have been part of the student’s first-year financial aid package. All other University need-based Financial Aid policies will apply to Frank Scholars.

Scholarship Name Need-based financial aid at Brown

Application Deadline Friday February 1, 2008
Description

All financial aid at Brown and all other Ivy League schools is need-based, so we offer no merit or athletic scholarships, but substantial need-based scholarship monies (grants) as well as low-interest student loans and work study. Please visit our Financial Aid Office website for more information about our extensive need-based financial aid resources, as we guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted freshmen for all 4 years of their study at Brown.

Two financial aid policies added at Brown beginning with the Class of 2012 include

  • All undergraduate financial aid recipients with total parent incomes less than $100,000 no longer have a loan component in their awards.  Loans are replaced with scholarship funds.  Students with family earnings above $100,000 have a significant reduction in loans.
  •
  • Families with total parent earnings less than $60,000 and assets less than $100,000 are no longer required to make a contribution toward the cost of education at Brown.

    Early Admission
    Early Admission Name Early Decision
    Web Site http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/applyingtobrown/earlydecision.html
Application Deadline Wednesday November 1, 2006
    Description

Early Decision is a plan under which first-year applicants to Brown may apply for admission in the fall of their senior year and receive an admission decision in mid-December. Early Decision is intended for students who consider Brown their top choice and therefore are willing to make a binding commitment to attend Brown if admitted. Early Decision is reserved for applicants who have not applied to any other Early Decision or Early Action programs (Ivy League or non-Ivy League institutions). Brown reserves the right to withdraw the applications of Early Decision applicants who do so. You may, however, apply to other colleges at any time under their respective Regular Admission programs.

    Application Process

Under the Early Decision program, your application credentials must be received by November 1. All completed Early Decision applications will be reviewed after November 1, and decision letters will be mailed in mid-December. At that time, you will be notified of one of three decisions:

    1. Your application is accepted
You must withdraw all Regular Admission applications to other colleges. Your place in Brown's first-year class is secure pending satisfactory completion of your senior year.

    2. A final decision on your application is deferred
This means that there were some unanswered questions about your application. Applications are usually deferred for the purpose of giving the Board of Admission more time to evaluate your credentials and to comparatively assess them as part of the Regular Admission pool of applicants.

    3. Your application is not accepted
If you are denied admission under Early Decision, you may not reapply for admission under the Regular Admission plan. The Board of Admission strives under Early Decision to make the same decision in December that it would make were you applying for an April decision.

It should not be assumed that your admission chances are improved by applying under the Early Decision plan. Each year’s group of applications are assessed on individual merits. The Board of Admission makes the same decisions under Early Decision that it would make under the Regular Admission plan. We utilize the Early Decision plan as a service which provides you with an early notification of your admission status.
