A unique combination of residential life, academic engagement, and social activities, the Phelps Scholars Program at Hope College prepares students to be leaders in an increasingly global society. Phelps Scholars are enriched by the experience of living in community with others from a broad range of cultural backgrounds, and together they explore the issues of diversity that shape our world.

The Phelps Scholars Program has been recognized by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as an exemplary diversity program in higher education.

So, who can apply to be a Phelps Scholar?

Anyone who is interested! We seek a diverse group of students, so we encourage applications from African-Americans, Asian-Americans, European-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans, as well as international students from around the world.

When do I apply, and what is the process?

Students are eligible to apply into the program once they have been admitted into Hope College.  The application is sent to all students who demonstrate interest, and all that is asked from the student is to:

Complete a short application form that emphasizes two questions:

• What would you hope to learn as a result of being a Phelps Scholar?
• What could you contribute to the program?

What We Do:

Cultural Competency: Incorporate a variety
of approaches including diversity training, workshops, lectures, classroom presentations, interactive programs, films, retreats and dialogues to help students and the campus community acquire critical cultural competencies needed to build synergistic relationships with people from all backgrounds in order to create a civic and moral community that works for the common good of humanity.

Leadership Development: Utilize various leadership models to help students develop vital skills needed to thrive in the 21st century; and promote the values of personal and collaborative empowerment, equity, social justice, citizenship and service.

Advocacy: Conduct research, surveys, focus groups, and climate studies; as well as collaborate with college constituents to foster an inclusive and equitable campus community.

Student Support and Mentoring: Provide advising, support, and mentoring to students in the areas of academic, personal, spiritual, financial, and career development.

Student Organizations: Provide advisory and leadership support to multicultural student organizations, including:

- Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Guided by Christian faith, the Office of Multicultural Education serves as a haven of support and celebration of racial/ethnic diversity and academic excellence, providing educational and developmental opportunities aimed at preparing all members of the campus and community to thrive in a diverse and global world.

Transitioning from high school to college is an exciting time filled with new beginnings and opportunities. However, many students have concerns during this time being away from family and friends and adjusting to a new environment. A great way to make a smooth transition is to make connections and form new relationships.

The Hope College FACES Mentoring Program is a wonderful way to begin making those connections as well as get the support and guidance that new students need. Our Peer Mentoring Program eases the transition to the academic and social environment of Hope College and the Natural and Applied Sciences Division for underrepresented freshmen students by providing mentoring relationships with an upper class mentor and group activities aimed at helping to facilitate these transitions.

The MISSION:

The mission of the FACES at Hope STEM mentoring program is to support and retain underrepresented minority students pursuing degrees in the STEM fields.

The mentoring program promotes academic success, retention, and successful graduation of underrepresented students through mentoring activities and support programs that encourage academic excellence, goal setting and career planning, and a sense of belonging and personal growth of participating students.

GOALS:

• Ease the transition process of underrepresented freshmen to Hope College
• Assist students in making a connection to the Natural and Applied Sciences division, Hope College, and the Holland Area
• Provide information about careers, study skills, and services available at Hope College

Heritage Awards: $3,000 to $14,000 per year

Scholarships awarded to students with a minimum high school GPA of 3.2, plus an ACT composite score of at least 22 or combined critical reading/math SAT of 1030, and who take an average of four college preparatory classes per semester in grades 9-12. Students from the following racial/ethnic groups will be considered: African American; Mexican American; Native American; Puerto Rican mainlander. Award recipients with financial need will have student loans kept to a minimum. Total award value: $12,000 to $56,000

Hope/University of Michigan Biomedical Scholarships

This award covers tuition, Room, board, and activities fee for four years at Hope College, and a guaranteed interview at University of Michigan Medical School.  Once enrolled at the University of Michigan, the University will provide in-state tuition and fees to cover four years in medical school. Note: there is a different cost for out-of-state tuition. 

Scholarships are awarded to students on the basis of overall high school academic record. Included in the review are strength of course load, class rank, grades, and standardized test scores. Students much have a clear interest in becoming a physician or earning a graduate degree in the basic science graduate programs of the University of Michigan Medical School. Students from the following racial/ethnic groups will be considered: African American; Mexican American; Native American; Puerto Rican mainlander. One award will be made each year to a member of the entering class. This award carries a value of well over $120,000!

Covenant Scholarships

Awards cover tuition, room, board, and activity fees for four years.

Scholarships are awarded to students on the basis of overall high school academic record. Included in the review are the strength of course load, class rank, grades, and standardized test scores. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who belong to racial ethnic groups that historically have not attended college at the same rate as people of European ancestry, and who have also been active participants in the multicultural life of their home communities, have demonstrated leadership abilities and who show promise for contributing actively to the quality of life on the Hope College campus.

Students from the following racial/ethnic groups will be considered: African American; Mexican American; Native American; Puerto Rican mainlander. Up to eight awards will be made each year to members of the entering class. Scholarship recipients will be expected to remain active in the multicultural life of Hope College. This award carries a value of more than $120,000.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

$17,000 per year - Scholarships awarded to students designated as National Merit Scholarship Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The Corporation will allow Hope College to sponsor these scholars who notify them that Hope is their first choice college. Total Award Value: $68,000

TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP

$17,000 per year - Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic record, standardized test scores and demonstrated leadership abilities. Finalists are selected from the applicant pool by a faculty committee. Thirty Trustee Scholarships are available per class. Total Award Value: $68,000
