Developing
a Career Plan |
Interests
- Make a list of your interests and activities you
have been involved in during the past few years.
Review all of the activities you were involved in
during junior high school and high school (i.e.
academic, sports, religious, clubs, organizations,
etc.)
- Think about the experiences you benefited from.
List at least 10 interests and activities.
- Circle the experiences that you most enjoyed.
Skills
- Think about skills you learned from school, part-time
jobs, home, volunteer work, clubs, religious activities,
etc.
- Make a list of your skills.
Evaluating Interests and Skills
- Look at the two lists you have developed and see
if there are any interests and/or skills that can
be turned into a career.
- List possible careers that might be of interest
to you.
Career Exploration
- When researching possible careers, think about
the following:
- Does it offer the salary and benefits you are
looking for?
- How much education (i.e. bachelors degree,
masters degree, doctoral degree, etc.) is needed
for this career?
- Do you have the grades to get into a college/university
that offers courses in this career area?
- Is there a market for this career or will you
have a hard time finding a job in this career?
- When exploring possible careers think about the
following:
- Can you participate in an internship program
that will help you determine if this career is
suited for you?
- Can you shadow someone in this career?
- Ask the professionals to describe the requirements
and skills, the type and amount of education,
and the experience needed for this career.
Developing a Career Goal
- A career goal helps to provide a path for your
career and is based on your skills, interests, career
possibilities, and job trends.
- A career goal can be specific or it can targeted
to a particular field. For example, a specific career
goal can be a doctor and a goal targeted to a particular
field can be medicine. By having a career goal targeted
to a particular field, you are able to discover
career possibilities that you might not have previously
considered.
